Welcome one and all to the first ever episode of Going Postal, where I will do my best to showcase music that you need to hear and artists that you have to discover in the realms of post music. Now that can encompass a variation of different sub genres which are still firmly attached to the Post style of music. This can range from the soft builds of Post-Rock to the energetic and emotionally charged soundscapes of Post-Metal and even Post-Styled-Black metal.
Now on the show today (with the exception of Amenra) I have tried my best to steer clear of the more mainstream bands out there. So there is no Alcest, no Deafheaven, No Sigur Ros, no Mono and so on. That’s not to say that any of those band deserve any disrespect it is merely down to the fact that this is show of discovery and my guessing would be that even if you are not familiar with the Post-Style of music, you would still know one if not all of those bands.
So who are we showcasing today?
Today we start things off with (Break My Fucking Sky – RU) who are a band I absolutely fell in love with from the first moment I heard them even though they confused the hell out of me. My first experience of this band was listening to “Eviscerate Soul” which I assumed would have some sort of brutality given the name of the album and the name of the band, but both couldn’t been further from the truth. Break My Fucking Sky are an act that transport your mind to another world where they elevate your emotions only to bring them down again, give them a hug then rip them to shreds. Its beautiful, its sad, its memorable. The song today is from the latest single “These Letters We’ll Never Send” and shares the same name. Be prepared to get lost and find it hard to get back again.
(Distant Dream – POL) are not a new band on my radar but I will treat them as so. Due to the fact I have lost touch with their music over the years. Now to date they have released Two full length albums and have gone from solo act to fully fledged band that are now touring and showcasing to the masses their brand of progressive prog rock. They are astoundingly complex and refined band that know the messages they want to get across and that message is to find your own journey amidst the road the music creates. “Falling Leaf” is the track presented here and is featured on the “Your Own Story” record. Take your time here, make sure your writing is clear and make sure there is a beginning, middle and end. Allow Distant Dream to guide you. You decide where.
Now we transition into what was once old but have now been reborn. Its no stretch to say that the traction of Post-Hardcore music has really hit its stride in the past few years with so many bands popping up out of no-where. The problem there is that so many bands will get lost in the shuffle. Ohio based (Castle No Kings – USA) will not be one of those bands as they simply command your attention with the sheer emotional impact of the music alongside the lyrics which are song with such conviction and pain that you feel them long after you have heard them for the first time. The songs don’t just stick in your head due to the catchy rhythm, they stick with you because they are honest and real and you can feel everything that is being told. The EP “Morphine” hits you hard with each of its 5 tracks and they don’t hold back. The song I have chose to showcase is from that EP and is called “Under The Weight”. As a side note watch the video for “Thinning Veil” and be prepared for something uncomfortable. Its enough to remind you that there is pain behind each smile.
Do you want something heavier? I SAID DO YOU WANT SOMETHING HEAVIER!? I truly hope the answer is yes because (Agrimonia – SWE) are hear to provide this as they tear down the walls with the meaty riffs and intense vocals. What sets this band apart from the others on the show today is only the significant style difference but the fact that this band has a female singer who can stand toe to toe with any man. This band will turn some heads and in fact they already have with there signing to Southern Lord records (There’s your doom reference WHP alumni). Be prepared to have your socks and shoes blown right off whilst your picking up the pieces of whatever parts of you are left after they have shot out of backside. Its time for the volume to go to eleven. All embrace “Foreshadowed” which you can find on the groups LP – “Awaken”
And so we end this debut episode of Going Postal with an uncomfortable yet eclipsing piece from Belgium band (Amenra – BEL). This band embody intensity in the most haunting way. From droning soundscapes that build a wall that is near impossible to pass through, to gentle and peaceful sections that still evoke pain and peace in equal measures. I have never been a huge fan of the depressive black metal style of vocal with the exception of Italian Post-Black metal band “Dreariness” yet within the confines of Amenras sound it works to illuminate an almost disturbing sound anguish and despair which work in harmony alongside the haunting clean vocals. This is band that should not only be experienced through the art of compact discs or downloads, these should be experienced live as on stage they truly come alive and every story told paints a whole new world for all those of experience it and you never leave the same as when you arrived. The song to see us out is “A Solitary Reign” from “Mass VI”
